How Weight Loss Works: Calories In vs Calories Out?

Hello Dear One!

 

Are we familiar with this equation?

 

And do we all believe it's as simple as that?

 

And if it is, have we ever struggled with this approach?

 

And simply believed we just needed to try harder??

 

If so you're not alone.

 

SO, yes to weight loss being a matter of what goes into and gets expended by our body - but HORMONES play a major role, and most consequentially for this focus - INSULIN.

 

 

 

Insulin is a fat storing and fat burning BLOCKING hormone.

 

When insulin is present in our system it does NOT ALLOW us to use our own body fat for fuel.

 

Instead it continues to have us pull from the small pool of sugar that we have available from our blood stream, then muscle cells and finally liver.

 

Every time we eat insulin is released.

 

It doesn't matter if it's chocolate or chicken* - insulin is there to help transport that fuel back into our muscles, liver, or FAT CELLS.

 

[*we release LESS insulin when we eat different types of food (like chicken), but if we're eating anything besides FAT ONLY = butter, oil, or heavy cream; insulin goes up)

 

When we put insulin into the equation (6 small meals a day anyone??) we hamper our body's ability to access our own fat for fuel.

 

And because that equation DOES need to be equal side to side (calories in vs calories out) what can sadly happen is the body will ADJUST - meaning lowering our metabolism and/or breaking muscle down for fuel if it can't get the energy it needs to balance the equation.

 

But the way to make that equation WORK for you is to take insulin OUT!

 

When insulin is NOT present we have EASY (if you're a Fat Burner) and EASIER access (if you're a mere mortal still running mostly on sugar) to our body fat for the FUEL our body needs to balance that equation.

 

 

So when we create a calorie deficit (essential to lose weight) by eating less and/or moving more the difference between our body's requirements and our input comes to us in the form of our own BODY FAT which is what we WANT.

 

Things to do to help keep insulin low or out  of your system more often than not?

 

- intermittment fasting

- eating less carbohydrates
